✨ FLASHBACK FRIDAY! ✨

Three years ago, I was celebrating 5 years of owning my own practice! 🥹🎉 Looking back at this celebration 🎉 , I honestly can’t believe how much I’ve learned, how much I’ve grown, and how much has changed since then.

For my first five years, I did it all solo. I built, learned, struggled, figured things out, made mistakes, celebrated wins, and continued showing up for my dream. 💪🏽

Then, two years ago, something unexpected happened… a group of amazing RDHAPs approached me, and I decided to take a chance. I stepped outside of my comfort zone and expanded my practice.

And today?! We now have FOUR RDHAPs in our practice! 🦷💕 I couldn’t be happier or more grateful.

This journey has taught me that growth doesn’t always look the way you originally planned it. Sometimes you have to take a chance. Sometimes you have to let people in. And sometimes the next level of your dream requires you to stop trying to do everything alone.

✨ Teamwork truly DOES make the dream work. ✨

When do we tell them that dental hygienists didn’t just learn how to “clean teeth”?

We learned how to:

🦷 Assess patients.
🦷 Formulate dental hygiene diagnoses.
🦷 Assess and diagnose periodontal conditions within our scope.
🦷 Interpret dental radiographs.
🦷 Administer local anesthesia.
🦷 Recognize and manage medical emergencies.
🦷 Study anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, pathology, nutrition—and the science behind what we do.
🦷 Assess. Analyze. Interpret. Plan. Treat. Educate. Evaluate.

WE ARE CLINICIANS.

The problem isn’t that we aren’t capable.

The problem is that too many people still don’t fully understand what dental hygienists are educated and trained to do and what we are truly capable of.

Many of us are already proving it.

I’ve owned and operated my own RDHAP practice for seven years.

Many hygienists are already practicing at the highest level their state allows.

The question is… when will everyone else catch up?

It’s time to educate our legislators.
It’s time to educate the dental community.
It’s time to make sure our profession is accurately understood.

Because dental hygiene is a profession.
Not simply a procedure.

The gap in dental 🦷 🏥 care is BIGGER than most people realize….

She was a single mother who had been embarrassed by her smile for years.

She brushed her teeth.

But she didn’t understand why there was still yellow, hardened buildup on her teeth. She thought she just wasn’t doing enough. She felt ashamed. She covered her mouth when she smiled.

And because she didn’t have dental insurance, getting care kept getting pushed further away.

She had been trying to get in for months.

Then she found me on Google. ✅

She called and I was able to see her within the hour.

This moment reminded me exactly why RDHAPs are so important.

Because access to care isn’t just about whether dental offices exist in a community.

There could be two dental offices on every corner, and people can still fall through the cracks.

because they don’t have insurance.
Because they can’t afford to pay everything at once.
Because appointments aren’t available when they need them.
Because they’re embarrassed and have waited so long that they’re afraid to even make the call.

As an RDHAP, I was able to provide her with care when she needed it, educate her on proper oral hygiene care and work with her to create a payment arrangement that made getting care possible.

She was happy. She was relieved. She could smile again without feeling ashamed.

This is bigger than cleaning teeth.

This is about access. Dignity. Prevention. Trust.

This is why independent dental hygienists help fill a gap in our communities.

It’s the difference between someone continuing to go without care and finally getting the help they need is simply having another door open.

🦷 RDHAPs aren’t replacing dentists. We’re helping close the gaps that already exist.

And there are still so many people waiting to be seen.
